Dreaming Of

Dreaming Of 02:56
DREAMING OF... When the whistle blows and sleep is in my head What will I be dreaming of? When I pull the shades and you’re not in my bed What will I be dreaming of? For you and I shared magical lies A kiss, a flame, a promise by the moon And every storm ridden night We held each other tight Was that more than a passing train? When you leave the Earth to find another skin Who will you be dreaming of? When the whistle blows and pages take the wind What will you be dreaming of? For you and I had four things in mind A bell, a book, a candle and a ruse So if the devil in our hearts should split this track in two The past would be more than we had hoped for Now the ride is through and only clouds remain What will we be dreaming of? What will we be dreaming of?

about

This song was originally composed and recorded in 1995 after hearing all these 40's type tunes on the car radio. The radio station was on some sort of tape loop and every time I started the vehicle (Meryl Mathew’s Mercury Tracer) I’d hear the same bunch of tunes over and over again. I actually kind of enjoyed that and this broadened my appreciation for the songwriting of 1930-40’s. Eventually, I made an attempt at writing in that sort of old fashion style and to my suprise a few people seemed to enjoy it. Most notably Bob Ball and Nick DiMauro Sr. Their enthusiasm encouraged me to ask a few female singers if they would be interested in singing the song. A female voice is what I had in mind when I sang it. At this time I was signed to Muffin Records (from Austin Texas) and the head of the company said he liked the song (he thought a female was singing it!) and he could get it to ex- Zappa alumni Bobby Martin and he in turn could give it to his then girlfriend - the actress / model, Cybil Shepard. Sounded good but nothing came of it. A few years later I approached producer Linda Goldstein with the song. She liked it but her busy schedule working for Bobby McFerrin and Cyndi Lauper made it impossible for her to find time to sing it (or so she told me). Eventually my friend Anthony Pomes played the song to his acquaintance, Monica DiZozza who lived in Manhattan. She liked the tune and they ended up performing it on the Joe Franklin show. Scroll a few decades later and my Sushi Savant band member Jim Pastor's daughter Angie was starting to get her feet wet in the music biz. I thought her voice would work for this tune and she seemed to have this past life connection with the music of the 40’s. A perfect match. I asked her if she would want to sing Dreaming Of. It would be her first professional recording to be released world wide. She agreed. I re-recorded all the parts, and changed a few words. Angie came by and sang it in two takes. Easy. She just knew what to do. She sounds like a young Billie Holiday. And so there it is. “Dreaming Of” lives on…
