From 2006- 2009 I produced a number of songs for Steve Bregman. He was a very shy singer songwriter. Like really shy. I could barely make out what he was singing most of the time. I remember him giving me the words for this tune originally entitled "Bleaker and Obliquer" written by author Arthur Phillips along with a basic keyboard track with no melody. I did not know how to proceed. I eventually coxed him into to singing a scratch melody with the lyrics so I could solidify the arrangement. Once done, it took shape pretty fast. I then asked Susan DeVita to sing it and she did as only Susan can in one perfect take. It came out great. Everyone was happy. Problem was Mr. Phillps had signed away the rights to his book that contained his lyrics. Consequently we were unable to release this song. A few years later for fun, I re-wrote the lyrics and sang it myself. And thus, with Steve's consent the song is now available for human consumption. Yeah, it's a downer - no doubt. But it is catchy. I like it.

lyrics

BLEAKER AND BLEAKER

I used to be one to complain
If it's not one thing it's the another
A broken record told my story
Bleaker - and getting bleaker

Putting up with someone's crap
Well it never made me a martyr
I tried to take a stand and fight back
But the forces of dark hit back harder

It's not that way for every kid
But destiny is unforgiving
If misery is your companion
Then misery is your companion

The flowers bloom the ivy grows - they shoot up all around me
Makes a pretty picture to cover up the fact I'm a loser in this life

And just when I think I'm in the clear thing get
Bleaker - and bleaker

One day I just dropped my sorrow had some fun in the sun
Stopped living in fear of tomorrow where I felt the worse was yet to come

I used to be the one to complain
But slowly I couldn't be bothered
Let this misery consume me
Bleaker and bleaker

Resigned to the fact and shrugging it off...
