This was the first 8-track tune Nick and I ever recorded. As soon as I got the equipment, we quickly hooked it up and taped. I sat down on an uncomfortable stool and made up a quick drum track. I then laid a few changes over the top (some obscure Akai tune that was never finished) and sang some improvised words to Steely Dan's "Dr. Wu" melody. The Juno 106 bass sound was then added and I convinced Nick to blow some out trumpet stuff to fill the holes up. Since we had no noise reduction, or reverb and only one cruddy microphone to record the drums, we were not pleased. It sounded like shit. I thought my Akai stuff sounded better, at least more cohesive. We called up Paul Michael Barkan in a fit of desperation and he brought over his cheap spring reverb. It made a difference to the overall mix. I was a little happier. He got us out of the "solo" mode, which was the only way we could hear, the music. We were never one to read manuals. Due to contrary belief the lyric "FAT TWIG ON MY SHOULDER" did not refer to Nick. It was subconscious fluff I just made up on the spot. The vocals were later re-cut with some new lyrics and the "water in the copper pot" sound was added. Three cheers for Paul Revere and his copper!
This sure was a test in a series of ten thousand tests. Till this day we're still being tested.

BOGEL IN MY SOUP

There's Bogel In My Soup
And A Fat Twig On My Shoulder
Causing Pain I Have Not Known
This Is Nothing New
The Annoyance Is A Teaser

Well How Do I Know What You Say Is True?
When I Caught You With My Teenage Pigeon
That Pistoria Queens
Basted And Groomed
Should I Just Dig A Hole?

There's A Place
Over Here

There's A Place
Where It Used To Be Much Safer And The Bogels' Never Dared
But As It Happens Twice A Day
The Most Secure Get Blown Away
Is This A Foreshadow Or What?
"Ah, Waiter, Bring Me More Sooooooooooooup!"

"Be-Fore I Dig A Hole!"

"In A Box Of Fluff By The Filing Cabinet."
"Yeah, That's Right In A Box Of Fluff!"
"Yeah!"

ND: "OK, Stop It."
