In an hour of total boredom, when the next part of my "life play" was being assembled, I jotted down most of the words to this song. It is merely an accurate observation of Charlotte the "studio" cat" who once resided at 21 Walnut Avenue in Stony Brook. Now, I was never a cat person until I started to live in the same house as Marci Geller. Marci is a major "cat" person so there was no escaping her influence. Fortunately, I'm not allergic to felines, although there was that one time at Bob Ball's house when one of his cats leaped on to my lap and all of a sudden my eyes began to tear and swell up. A touch of Benadryl™ took care of that, but looking back for a sec...

I had two dogs as pets in my childhood. The first one was a standard beagle we named Compass. Compass had a severe case of "something wrong" (I don't know - worms? ). He would often bump into walls and walk in circles. A mere pup; we had to put him to sleep. Needless to say my sister and I (still in our single digits) were existentially shocked. A few years later my dad brought home a cute, little Yorkshire Terrier that we kept and christened "Monday". Pretty pedestrian name but I always called him "dog". Anyway we all loved that little creature and he lived to the ripe old age of thirteen. Everyone was heartbroken the day he went into convulsions and had a stroke. My sister Laura unfortunately was living in Brooklyn at the time and she has always been angry at the universe for never giving her the chance to see him before he passed away. Believe me, it was not a pleasant sight. At any rate, a week or two later we purchased another Yorkie that my mother Imaginatively named "Monday" (okay). By this time I was kind of out of the house and this newer, more streamlined version of Monday became mostly my Mom and Dad's responsibility. At thirteen years of age he was still humping this miniature, stuffed buffalo I won at Karly Ostling's birthday party in 1988. I liked him in a very aloof sort of way. So ultimately, I was pretty used to having a pet in and around my environment. Pets keep good energy flowing in the hallways (although I'm not sure how I feel about reptiles and spiders). They allow us to project our best or worst qualities into them. This leads me back to Charlotte who was the first cat I've ever been fond of. She was worthy of a song because she was so consistently goofy in her everyday routines and she seemed to love me unconditionally. I miss her. Later on when Charlotte passed away from cancer I bonded with Marci and Gian's new cat, Catrina. And she too, was worthy of a song.

lyrics

CHARLOTTE DOESN’T CARE

Jump down and scratch the sofa
And run just as fast as
When you pull your hand from a stove
Her nose is cold
But Charlotte’s unaware
She’s into mischief and she’ll get away
No, Charlotte doesn’t care
She’s small
Charlotte doesn’t care
As long as she’s got a moth to bully by the stairs
She will slice it with her sharp nails
And lick it on the rug
See a sun flair
Get distracted - forget to eat the bug
Is that a rubber band next to the chair?
Charlotte doesn’t care
As long as she’s got dry food
The same she eats each day
It makes me wonder how she stands it
But she won’t complain
Though sometimes she will cry
When no one’s around to rub her belly
Lazy Happy Charlotte - Life is in the now
It’s all a blur to this fur ridden lynx
But what she’s thinks, may be slightly more advanced than a cow
And she can sure chase her tail a lot faster
But Charlotte doesn’t care
No, Charlotte’s unaware
Unless a ghost is on the stairs
She’s small.
I like tiny Charlotte

This cat doesn’t ask me
to make cassettes. You know what I’m sayin’?
