This is a sentimental ballad that was a rip off of Martin Mull's " The Best Of You ". Somehow I managed to hide it. But fact is fact. The first melody idea I came up with, Nick DiMauro said was too melodic and should cool out during the verses. I took his advice and simplified it. That first melody was later re-used for the 24-track song, "Silent Junkie". If you just play the chord changes of Don't Look Back you can sing the melody and words of Silent Junkie" over it. The hook of “Don't Look Back” is reminiscent of a Gill Scott Herron tune I can't quite remember. I hate the way I sang this song. It's fake Michael McDonald but I couldn't hear it any other way. It wasn't intentional. Later I re-thought this tune in 1997 and "The Time Will Come", which is on the Tell Me Why CD, is the result.

The lyrics have a special meaning for me. They were written shortly after my dog MONDAY died. I loved that animal very much. He was like having a little brother around the house. Occasionally I'll hear a certain kind of dog bark and it'll remind me of the good times I had with him.

The message is clear: People, you've got to move on. Death comes to everything but in the meantime live life and grow for the universe. Make your checks payable to the Priest care of...

lyrics

DON'T LOOK BACK

When the weather's right
Senses unfurl bringing back a picture
Of another place
Not a happy world but one that really hurt you

It's enough to make you crash
And it's hard to let it be
It's enough to make you crash yeah...
And spread that hurt to me

SO DON'T LOOK BACK
LIVIN' IS WASTED WHEN YOU DWELL IN THE PAST
DON'T LOOK BACK
CARRY THE GOOD TIMES SO THE FUTURE CAN LAST
DON'T LOOK BACK
(If only for good times...)

Now if you spend your nights
Thinkin' of what was and how you could have changed it
And it's like a crime
Just lettin' out a laugh when homages are spoken

Better take a look around
There's a future fun and free
Better take a look around yeah...
And share that fun with me

SO DON'T LOOK BACK
LIVIN' IS WASTED WHEN YOU DWELL IN THE PAST
DON'T LOOK BACK
CARRY THE GOOD TIMES SO THE FUTURE CAN LAST
DON'T LOOK BACK

Just blow out the candles
Bury the scandals
There's only room for NOW
DON'T LOOK BACK

(scat verse)

SO DON'T LOOK BACK
LIVIN' IS WASTED WHEN YOU DWELL IN THE PAST
DON'T LOOK BACK
GOTTA CARRY THE GOOD TIMES SO THE FUTURE CAN LAST
DON'T LOOK BACK
