"Fantasys Are Safer" Is a true story. This work was originally started by Gian in 1988 as a parody of an XTC song the name of which escapes me. I took a cassette version he made for me with just the basic track meandering. After hours of playing it back in my Awai walkman while cleaning our 20 by 40 built in pool I realized the basics to the melody. The part “I once had a true companion” was made up on the spot as I overdubbed vocals on my 8-track machine. “True companion” is of course a reference to Donald Fagen’s masterpiece “True Companion” from the movie Heavy Metal. As far as the lyrics are concerned, they were pretty easy to assemble having had nothing but bad experiences trying to find the right significant other in this life. Hopefully that will change but I do believe that one’s fantasies are a lot better than the real thing. You don’t have to deal with the smell in your dreams.

The original finished version of this tune was at one time found on my first 24 -track album called “Life Here It’s Anybody’s Guess”. My vocal and Jim’s guitar solo are almost identical to that one but that version lacks the beautiful intro Gianni came up with as well as a real drummer and bass player. More continuity for the It Iz What It Iz puzzle.
