After Susan DeVita heard the lyrics to "The Way I See It" she said it was a false song. It was too imaginary and had nothing to do with the reality of our relationship. After contemplating her thoughts on the subject for over a year I decided that maybe there was another angle I could write about. I'd keep the music (lower a few keys) and sing new lyrics. Though I still take to heart the original lyrics and I do believe them true, perhaps these new ones point to another reality that is based more on fact and less than what's in my fantasies.

lyrics

FLAME YOU CARRY

There's a time for singing
A time to pitch a tent
A time for making money just enough to pay the rent
In a place she never wanted
That wasn't heaven sent
Pardon, but is that a flame you carry?

The battle between youth and age
She faces every year
Poverty, injustice, indifference and the fears
Of someday living in a cardboard box - in back of Sears
In the distance she hears a familiar song
But something 'bout it rubs her wrong

The roofing in her Garden City house is made of the finest slate
Worth more than all the paychecks that I've made since I was eight
I'm thinking of maybe taking up my own collection plate
'Cause starving sure dampens the flame I carry
Starving sure dampens the flame I carry

I know a girl who killed a man for singing American Pie
Took on a whole new meaning - "This'll be the day I die."
She said the song went on too long it wasted too much time
Well pardon, but is that a flame you carry?
