TILL THE 13th OF JULY

This piece was conceived at Meryl Mathews parents house in Bethpage, NY in January of 1996. I put down the basic parts and Meryl and I came up with a hook and a rap to go over the music bed. The story line of which, centered around a fictional murder that takes place on July 13th, and it’s eventual exploitation in the press.

LIGHTNING BOLT AT SEVEN
BED REMAINS UNDONE
DISHES PILE IN THE SINK
HER FRIENDS WOULD ALL BE STUNNED
LAUNDRY LAY IN LIMBO
‘CAUSE THE LOVER LOST HER WILL
NEVER PLAIN AND SIMPLE
WHEN THE HEART BEATS STILL

BLOOD ALONG THE HALLWAY
THE SHOWER DRAINS A MESS

Basically, the murderer gets away with the act and becomes famous. Probably inspired a bit by the O.J. Simpson shananigans. (“O.J. Who?” Some kid asks in the future.) Suffice to say, both of us found ourselves busy with other things (like trying to get money to eat and pay rent) thus the track sat around unfinished. I lost interest in the piece but did manage to make a good mix of the basic track with the D-50 synth solo, which (for those of you with sharp ears) will correlate bits of it dancing around in the background music of : Smokey Lee Webster’s Rise To Musical Rejection.)

My Keys / Lately / Virtual 3D Nuggets

The first part of this collage is just Paul Michael Barkan and I testing out our Pro Tools™ set up he just purchased. Underneath this absurd dialogue is a piano piece that was later orchestrated in 1999. Following this “key ownership talk” is a Lennon and McCartneyesque idea I had. I’ll call it “Need Some New Sneakers” for arguments sake. I used it as a warm up to something else I can’t remember. The words were improvised and nothing to write about, but the emptiness I was feeling at the time I think was accurately captured. That some how segues into an imaginary list of physical events one might be able to experience in the near future.


The sexy voice belongs to Marci Geller’s long time friend Dana Gelmen. I always liked the tone of Dana’s voice. She claims she can’t sing but I bet she would sound like (Kay Star, vocalist from the 40’s) if she tried. I just plopped these words in front of her and in two or three takes she had it down. Just what I wanted. Didn’t know where it would end up but it found it's home in this montage.

With the advent of Virtual 3 D Nuggets teenagers as well as uptight adults can now participate in private sexual hoedowns without any of the misfortunes of disease or religious guilt. And all at a reasonably low price. Those who choose not to seek release in this area of recreation are admitted several bedside options.
