This piece is a montage of two works that share the lyrical phrase Goodbye Blue Monday. The phrase is from one of my favorite novels, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut. The lyrics also quote a line from Captain Beefheart’s wonderfully bizarre piece, Tropical Hot Dog Night. Beefheart had just passed away while I was working on this so I dedicate it to him. This first part is an odd time ostinato inspired again by Rich Stein's “Bella X2”.

The second part features Mike Frost on bass and Chris DeMeglio playing a bunch of trumpet solos I manipulated that never made it to it’s original destination. That destination being, Cathy Kreger’s version of "Ode To Billy Joe". Cathy and I decided Chris’ playing did not quite have the continuity we were looking for in terms of a solo. So we put it aside. Just out of curiosity I mixed all his solo attempts simultaneously until I heard something that sounded cool. I tinkered with it a bit and stored it for future use. This is where it sits now.

The third section is a xenographic experiment constructed with various sound bytes and riffs. In this case, the guitar is lifted from an unused solo from the song "Kind Of Relief" and cut up in various hooky ways. The operatic vocals were taken from a recording I did in a Stony Brook church. They were accompanied by a piano player. I painstakingly cut around the piano and focused on some nice Italian catch phrases. It might be from Verdi - not sure. This was really like having a piece of clay and just ripping pieces off semi-randomly until something cohesive appears. Does it work?

lyrics

GOODBYE BLUE MONDAY

SD: One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock... Pew-cock!

JT : Do you wanna love me? Do wanna love me till the end of the world?
Do you wanna love me? Do wanna love me till the end of the world?
Do you wanna love me? Do wanna love me till the end of the world?
Till the end of the world
Do you wanna love me?
Are you gonna love me?
Do you really love me?
Till the end of the world...

Goodbye blue Monday
Say goodbye to me and Kilgore Trout

Goodbye blue Monday
Time to give you up and spit you out

Out!
Goodbye!

Make me young
Make me young

"Step out of the triangle into striped light!"

The man was not insane

Erase the slate and start all over again

Vic Caroleo : What'll that be if ya gonna speak like this pops?

Goodbye Blue Monday
Goodbye to you
Goodbye Blue Monday and all your psycho friends

Opera lady : Come on a give da not day
Come on and give the not day!"
Come on a give da not day, there's a maid on fire
Promise
Holy crap!

VC : What'll that be?
