Musician Tom Gould from The Bossa Nova Beatniks sent me just a melody his wife Melissa composed. She had vocalist Jerry Dugger sing it. No chords or rhythm section were provided. Tom wrote in his email that if something strikes me to somehow enhance the vocal. "Go for it". So I found a tempo to fit Jerry's vocal and then added a simple drum beat. Getting the timing right was not easy but with some patience I fleshed it out. I fished around for what I thought were good chords to support the melody. That was actually the easy part. Amused by my harmonic futzing, I then started to take the idea one step further and composed a middle section. Any co-writer who has worked with me knows I love to write middle sections. The challenge of going to another place in a song and somehow coming back to the main melody coherently is always a challenge. In this case, I actually sing the middle section because Jerry was not around. The lyrics and the melody came pretty quick once I figured out the chords. Like anything it's always gonna be a hit and miss thing when presenting a new idea to the unsuspecting writer. In this case, Melissa Gould. Fortunately, she seemed to like the direction I took the song and she gave me the go ahead to tidy up the production and mix it proper. It might be the slowest tempo song I've ever done but I think it moves along quite nice.
