Words and Music © 1986 by John Tabacco and Nick DiMauro
Published by It Iz What It Iz Music (SESAC)

This was the last 8 track song we ever collaborated on. It was written about the time I quit my rent a car job. I remember working on it with Nick when all of a sudden I hear the door bell ring. I answer it and lo and behold it's none other than a few of my co-workers standing there all smiles with some flowers, a card and $70.00. What a strange, unexpected existential moment that was. Enhanced no less by this tune in the background. Weird. Just weird.

How this song came about is not very weird and not much different than "Take Another Chance On Love". I sat down at the PF 70 and said to Nick, "Nick Dimauro RIDING a tune.." I proceeded to play chord changes that used his voicings. He laughed and or threw something at me, and quickly had me repeat the progression. He came up with the basic melody and I threw in a Steely Dan "Aja" chord (A add the 4th over B) at the end of each hook . We finished the lyrics in a day or so. Nick did a scratch vocal for Cheryl Palisi to sing but we had no luck setting up a session with her. We did manage to coax Jerry to come over to play acoustic / chorused guitar. Unfortunately, a finished version of the song doesn't exist. All we have is Nick's scratch vocal run through a stereo phasing effect and me jokingly changing the reverb patch during the middle sections. We both love this little bossa nova and swear we're gonna finish it someday. Someday.

Note: I added a few overdubs in 2008 at Suburban Hermit Studios II.

lyrics

I'LL BE THERE ALWAYS

And if you feel it’s not enough
And if the moment seems to fade away
And your perception dulls a misty shade of gray...

I’ll be there to rest your fears
I’ll be there to dry your tears
I’ll be there to steer you clear
Always

And if you find yourself alone
And every game becomes a soldier’s play
And if you ever want to throw it all away

I’ll be there to rest your fears
I’ll be there to dry your tears
I’ll be there to steer you clear
Always

And if I gave you my heart, would you come to me?
Or would you tear me apart?

And if you say it’s not enough
And all tomorrow’s just a day gone by
And every laugh becomes another way to cry...

I’ll be there to rest your fears
I’ll be there to dry your tears
I’ll be there to steer you clear
Always
