Originally called "The Best Of Yo" but it sounded stupid. The lyric concept centers on the will to do things in a positive fashion. The song was directed to Yo Oxenhandler and Chris Pati. Chris and I had raised $50,000 for some big studio deal Yo was putting together. This song was written in hopes that the deal would ultimately go down despite the stock market crash of 87. Well, the deal didn't go down. My folks, my sister and some close friends lost all their money. It's a long and complex story that will be told in full detail at a later date.

Danny Wilson’s “Five Friendly Aliens” and Susan DeVita’s “Saturday Girl” influenced the music. It's a commercial live drum, one take recording. It uses an E minor 9 chord in the middle section, which I have used on tunes like "Somethin' To Believe In". In 2004 I sped the whole thing up and digitally overdubbed a hi-hat part to give the song more momentum. Catchy.
Am I nuts, but isn't the melody of the hook from a Pat Benetar number? ANSWER ME DAMN IT!

Of note : Twenty two years later, the verse melody of this tune found it's way into a song I wrote with Jim Dexter called "All The Things We Need Here" and there is a Euro-Trance instrumental of this piece entitled "I Can Crawl Again" found on the "It Wuz & Still Iz Late Octobra" collection.

lyrics

IT'S GONNA TAKE THE BEST OF YOU

It's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you
And I am sure we just can't lose

It's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you
And either way we just can't lose

We wuz out on the dole line
Just living and scraping and faking our way
We were - we were sweating on the fault line
Praying and screaming and tracking the waves

But now the plans are drawn up
And all of the alien walls are down
Baby please don't give up
Pretty soon we will have it all

But it's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you
I know that we can see it through
It's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two

There's a house by the seaside (a house by the seaside)
Just waiting and begging for me and for you

Will be - will be off to a new high
Exploring the angles we never had time
'Cause now the plans are drawn up
And all of the alien walls are down
It's much to close to give up
Pretty soon we will have it all

But it's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you
And either way we just can't lose
It's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you

Don't you worry
There's always a problem to face
Don't you worry
You should know that it's only a phase

But it's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you
I know that we can see it through
It's gonna take the best of you
It's gonna take the strength of two
It's gonna take the best of you
I know that we can see it through
It's gone take the best, the best, the best, the best,
The best of you
