I improvised this over a quick drum pattern I programmed. The hook chords are reminiscent of the Tabacco / DiMauro collaboration "Do What You Have To", but the sentiment is different. I re-sang it 2 or 3 times trying to get the right attitude (matter of fact and sad, not sappy). Nick liked the idea and he was inspired to write a beautiful middle section for it. We re-recorded the tune from scratch and that became "Looks #2".

LOOKS (Genteel Version)

I remember a time and place
Where a boy with a twisted face
Said he didn’t know why the circus was his home
And his mother always carried a picture-cube of someone else’s kid
‘Cause she couldn’t live down the stories of her womb

I remember a time and place
Where a girl with a pretty face
Saidshe didn’t know why a boy like that should live
And her mother snapped several pictures for somebody else’s kids
Ain’t that a good enough reason to do away his life?

‘Cause looks are super special when you don’t look deep inside
The rejections hit the likes of you and me
Looks are superficial and out weigh the finer gifts

There may always be time and place
For a role in a super race
Where the ugly in life no longer have a home
But I doubt that it matters what dream you dream so long as you awake
To a world of bigger egos than yourself
