Originally a short piece I recorded and played for NIck. He liked it and reconstructed a gorgeous
middle section out of an idea he had written the previous year. The pairing of my idea and his works in some twisted way even though harmonically and melodically they're different. Jerry plays low Zappa guitar alla "The Muffin Man", Gian DiMauro plays trumpet along with the Mirage sampled horns and I try my best to be serious. For some unknown reason the only thing on tape to sing to was a reference track with bass and drums. Since I did not fully understand how to lock up the computer with the 8 track at the time, I sang to just this. It was a bitch to hear the pitch. I made sure that wouldn't happen again.

The lyrics are typical "Snorkle Mug" orientated; always about some loser who had no choice in his horrible state of affairs due to societies whims. It's a bit preachy for me but the concept was cohesive and the whole thing rhymed well.

The circus sounds at the beginning were added as I remastered the drop outty beta hi fi mix at MVR in 1991.

In 2014 I arranged this piece for 2 marimbas aptly titled it as "Latin Looks". Honeyrock Publishing actually printed it up and is currently selling on their website. www.honeyrock.net/sc-mxv%20duets/latin_looks_for_two_marimbas.htm

lyrics

LOOKS (Genteel Version)

I remember a time and place
Where a boy with a twisted face
Said he didn’t know why the circus was his home
And his mother always carried a picture-cube of someone else’s kid
‘Cause she couldn’t live down the stories of her womb

I remember a time and place
Where a girl with a pretty face saidshe didn’t know why a boy like that should live
And her mother snapped several pictures for somebody else's kids
Ain’t that a good enough reason to do away his life?

‘Cause looks are super special when you don’t look deep inside
The rejections hit the likes of you and me
Looks are superficial and out weigh the finer gifts

There may always be time and place
For a role in a super race
Where the ugly in life no longer have a home
But I doubt that it matters what dream you dream so long as you awake
To a world of bigger egos than yourself

‘Cause looks are super special when you don’t look deep inside
The rejections hit the likes of you and me
Looks are superficial and out weigh the finer gifts
