Mama Used To Whisper In My Earwas spawn from the many re-workings
of Corny Muzak Parade Of Doom. I did some keyboard arrangements of
it but they didn’t quite thrill me. During one of these private investigating gigs I messed with the basic ideas on acoustic guitar and juxtaposed a Billy Joel like chorus that dates back to 1983. The piece then took on a completely different feel and I was inspired to record it. I wrote the lyrics, programmed the parts, sang, and basically mixed it in about 7 hours. I kept the production sparse for optimal sound quality and deeply compressed the snare to give it that Donald Fagen" K a m a k i r i a d" sound (yeah right). The ending seemed like it needed a little more ear candy, so I overdubbed a keyboard melody borrowed from Marci Geller’s hopeful tune " I Will Be There". This is a pretty ballad I sang with Marci many times while playing in her band "Point Of Y o u" .

The lyrics were inspired by my Dad’s heart attack and FZ’s passing.

lyrics

MAMA USED TO WHISPER IN MY EAR

The news comes fast
It's hard to settle down
Messages and signals keep you tumbling around
So much for the dead lines and the fun between your hands
Someone's life has ended and it's time to change your plans

Oh don't be sorry - Oh don't be sad - Oh not to worry
Mamma used to whisper in my ear:
“See it through and over come your fear”

The news comes fast
It interrupts us all
It keeps the flow from flowing when we finally grab the ball
Can't keep happy endings
Happy endings never last
Just when you had it figured out it messes up yo' ass

Oh don't be sorry
Oh don't be sad
Oh not to worry
Mama used to whisper in my ear
“See it through and over come your fear”
“Trust the inner voices that you hear”
“Peace be called a river when your dying day is near!”

( Rivibra solo flows here... )

Oh don't be sorry
Oh don't be sad
Oh not to worry
Mama used to whisper in my ear
“See it through and over come your fear”
“Trust the inner voices that you hear”
“Peace be called a river when your dying day, your dying day is near!”
