This piece was constructed specifically for Paul Michael Barkan's Yamaha PF 70 Keyboard. He left it in my bedroom for a spell and I liked some of the sounds. I quickly threw together a song made up of ideas slated for a work about Liz Eldredge. Liz was a professional ice skater I was secretly in love with at my rent- a- car job. I'm not sure why I was in love with her. Basically we had nothing in common. Perhaps it was a past life thing. Something was definitely there between us and she knew it too. Anyway, judging by the lyrics of this tune you'd never guess its origins. It's about the end of the world due to a big explosion, (a dream I often have but not about this planet).

Technically, most of the PF 70 patches were used. Unfortunately, I did not make an effort to get the levels even each time I punched in a new sound. Consequently it was a nightmare to mix. The Mirage woodwind sample plays a big role in the orchestration. The voicing of the final chord was modeled after Stravinsky’s brilliant” SYMPHONY OF WIND INSTRUMENTS”. The ending is also a premonition of the 1997 quintet, "Reasonable Housemates" found on the CD Sans Lyrics Volume 2.

For some reason this piece is a favorite of Peter Kearns. Maybe he'll do a version of it someday.

lyrics

NOBODY MATTERED

So a voice is crying below a shattered dome
And oh, there’s no denying
An open wound is waiting to be sewn
Who knows what pain we’re feeling
Can’t tell, the nerves are gone
So fast, the end is nearing
As the film rewinds and medics leave the show

The sand on the hill top is falling
The sand on the hill top is God
the sand on our shoes are recalling
The greatest thrill we’ve ever known

Nobody mattered
We all went together
I saw the flash in the sky
Xmas was fun but next one will be better
No second guess (I’m not depressed)
Next one will be better

So, the earth is slowing
And so, the sun will roar
Above, a star is calling But sorry we don’t live here anymore

The sand on the hill top is falling
The sand on the hill top is God
the sand on our shoes are recalling
The greatest lie we’ve ever known

Well, nobody mattered
We all went together
I saw the flash in the sky
Xmas was fun but next one will be better
No second guess (No, I’m not depressed)
Next one will be better
