Note :
After having put down the bass part to Susan DeVita’s song “What Is An Ocean?” Dan Ehrlich asked us if we wanted to hear a song he was working on. Of course being the competitive songwriters that we are, we were game to listen. So, he played us this loop with bass and drums from his iPhone. It went on for about two minutes. That was all he had. No words - no melody - nothing resembling what we would call a song. Just this nice funky groove. Well, Susan and I said to him as politely as possible, “That’s a great loop Dan, but where’s the song?” To which he replied, “Well, you guys can write something over it”. Susan and I just looked at each other like "OK". So I recorded it onto my computer, put it on a disc and gave a copy to Susan. We worked on it independently. Since I had the accessibility of recording equipment to try out ideas over this loop I naturally was able to present something quicker to Dan than Susan. Susan did not seem to mind but I never did get to hear her idea. I’m sure it was great. Maybe one day she’ll “open up” and let me hear it. Anyway, Dan seemed to like my direction and so I did this is kind of upscale demo of it. I inserted the middle section into his loop (which is just a just a stereo mix). This is why the drums and bass change timbre at that point. The transition seemed to blend, so I went with it. The final mix had a certain vibe I liked and the response I got from a few people who I played it for were pretty positive. Maybe at one point we’ll do a “proper version” of it. But for now...

lyrics

OPEN UP (LOST AND FOUND)

Open up - you might get lucky
That’s the charm of this lonely town
Open up - you might find someone
You left at the lost & found
Left at the lost and found…

Karma says you know what comes around
will deal you the pain or the pleasure
But Papa says that when our work is done
our actions become the treasure

One brick at a time might seem an endless task to some
But know the sun still shines,
though clouds may rain & thunder

Open up - you might get lucky
That’s the charm of this lonely town
Open up - you might find someone
You left at the lost & found
Left at the lost and found…

One brick at a time might seem an endless task to some
But know the sun still shines,
though clouds may rain & thunder

Open up – you might get lucky –
That’s the charm of this lonely road
Open up you might find somebody
Who’s willin’ to share your load
Open up - you might get lucky
That’s the charm of this lonely town
Open up - you might find someone
You left at the lost & found
Left at the lost and found…
