Pog was Chris Pati and Sherry Jean Waite's cat. I had no real connection with the animal other than we both enjoyed eating fake yellow plants and puking it up on Persian rugs. But seriously, most cats seem kind of disconnected to the presence of familiar humans. They tend to live in their own space unlike dogs that constantly need attention and a hairy arm to hump. Anyway, I was trying to write a Modern Voices type of tune for Sherry to sing. It never saw the light of day. I borrowed an idea from an old AKAI tune ("Tuning You In") as the basic influence. I was working with Dennis Massa at the time on his children's record "Booper Ba Nooper" and that whole experience influenced me in a " playful" way. I thought of this song as the theme of a teenage cartoon that featured rock stars who needed help from Pog. Pog of course was the cat that held all knowledge in its eyes. She / he, lived on and was fed through a mahogany desk that was housed in a pyramid (The Akashic Records). Every night this cat would astral project to a place called "THE CRIPPLED SPIDER". There, it would dance up a frenzy with devoted out of body types and open-minded beings from all over the universe. Music stars (a special commodity you can only get from Earth) would be the bulk of the entertainment. The cat would read their minds at request. A guide provided by Pog would solve whatever problems they were having in the music business. However, a secret, outrageously ironic expense would have to be paid for by the musician at the end of every show and that's the only real reason anybody would wanna watch it.

Musically, this song is interesting in the way that it modulates smoothly down a step in the second verse. It works. It's a one take, real time drum recording I finished in the Stony Brook music department, 2nd floor, graduate office # 2222. For some reason I can still remember how to play it on piano. That's a rarity for Mister Un-confident Shybags. The final mix was executed at MVR in 1991 and later sped up a bit during the mastering process.

lyrics

POG AND THE GIRLS FROM THE CRIPPLED SPIDER

The river earth is low tonight and the smog is blowing in
A jungle moon "mysterium" is collecting from within
Politics are broken
Not a truth is spoken

Well, Pog and the girls couldn't get much higher
Jammin' away to the hit parade
Pog and the girls from the crippled spider
Dancin' the night like some renegades
Pog and the girls and the one on fire...

(A lone skeptic thinks to herself):
Somebody feed me the bigger life ...

As the world is up in arms and the future up in stars
The gossamer of youthful dreams are nothing more than scars
Brutal forces chiding
Demigods are hiding
While:

Pog and the girls couldn't get much higher
Jammin' away to the hit parade
Pog and the girls from the crippled spider
Dancin' the night like some renegades
Pog and the girls and the one on fire...

(A lone skeptic thinks to himself):
I'm waitin' 'round for the bigger life

Somehow it seems that all my dreams lie in between joy and disaster
I don't have to buy them but I can't deny them
Pog!

(A lone skeptic thinks to himself):
I'm waitin' 'round for the bigger life

Oh, Pog and the girls couldn't get much higher
Jammin' away to the hit parade
Pog and the girls from the crippled spider
Dancin' the night like some renegades
Pog and the girls and the one on fire...
Jammin' away to the hit parade
Pog and the girls from the crippled spider
Dancin' the night like some renegades
Pog and the girls and the one on fire...

Somebody feed me the bigger life ...
Somebody feed me the bigger life ...
Somebody feed me the bigger life ...
Somebody feed me the bigger life ...
Somebody feed me the bigger life ...
Somebody feed him some food..

The Priest : Feed him now Phillup!
