This was written in early 1993. It was originally called Audra Town. The name of which had something to do with a mutual friend of Nick DiMauro and Kim O’Brien; the details of which are too foggy for me to remember.

Basically, a series of ideas in the key of “E” came to me one day as I lay on the uncomfortable futon in the cold, corked tiled Sonic Underground Studios vocal booth. I quickly blurted them out onto a little Panasonic™ cassette deck Marci Geller bought me as a gift. Like a blind man given musical puzzle pieces to fit together I interchanged ideas this way and that until something fit. Eventually, I arrived at various solid melodic hooks and verse ideas that inspired the following songs: Baby’s Chief Distraction, Sensitive Joan, Wet September, Fool For Torture, Don’t Be Afraid Of Thunder, Zip Squat Beep, 27b Stroke 6, Stage fright Lover and It Don’t Take A Genius. In this particular instance, Nick DiMauro’s wife, Kim O’Brien helped us on the lyrics. Thus, if they seem to read more accessibly meaningful than the usual comedic, bizarre fanfare Nick and I came up with, that’s why. This song can be found on the CD Brian Rivera : Tragedy @ Hand. We performed it live two times back in 1994 under the group name White Noise . Our mutual friends and patron of the arts, Bob Ball and Dave Seigle always liked it. This version is for you guys.

lyrics

SOLDIER TOWN

In Soldier town there's plenty to see all around you
So come on down town
Where we can do anything we let you
(don't think it's censorship)
Don't you worry I'm too hip
(scream shout never mind)
I'll just keep my place in line
(sit back enjoy the show)
My days are just a hazy glow
But just who slaves to make it so I don't wanna know

in soldier town there's plenty of clowns in the streets
Well, in Soldier town baby there's never a frown
So order around, all around

In Soldier town there's plenty of work look around you
But keep your eyes on the ground
Or we'll leave you right where we found you
(we know what's best for you)
Sometimes i believe it's too
(we'll say how much you need)
Please let it be enough to eat
(you'll get what you deserve)
Working past my last reserve
Some are only made to serve and to say yes sir

In Soldier town
Land of plenty there's plenty to eat
Well, in Soldier town baby
You'll all come around and around and around and around...

Jesus saves in the blood of sacrifice
Money talks but it's not afraid to fight
So who cares if a few have got to die
For our rights like our right to this life

In Soldier town there's plenty of blood in the streets
Well, we wash them down baby
And it keeps them nice and neat
In soldier town almost anyone can be bought cheap
Well, in Soldier town baby, let's fire around
All around and around and around and around and around
and a round and a round etc…
