A rather upbeat song from the Fuzzy Gray Logic CD.
This was a somewhat easy one to interpret on acoustic guitar. I tried my hand at a bunch of other material written with Meryl Mathews but her advanced chord changes are way too difficult for me to play with any kind of finesse and they’re really integral to how our songs sound. In any event, this stripped down version is a straighter take on the tune rhythmically. Lyrically I changed a word or two in the middle section by accident. It was the best take and the words still made sense so I kept it. Meryl and I wrote this one mostly at Modern Voices Studios in Centerport and Donna Bach sang the harmony with me. We rushed the recording on to two tracks of an 8 track tape because I was moving out of the studio and I needed a record of all the musical ideas we had lying around. A year later we had Gerry Palisi overdub his guitar parts over the stereo mix and the results were pretty good. If only I had the foresight to do a mix without so much reverb. The original parts that made up the two track tape were lost. And Gerry’s guitar parts reside on a dat tape that only the obsolete program Studio Vision can reassemble. Oh well. It iz what it iz.

lyrics

SOMETHIN' TO BELIEVE IN

Out of the darkness into the blue light
Duckin' the social junk you learned in school
Look in the mirror
Can't find an answer
It leaves you dry without a clue
Well, it don't take much for the spirit to give out
Can't keep on living this way

We all need somethin' to believe in
Gotta have truth in our lives
We all need somethin' to believe in
Gotta have truth in our lives
We all need somethin' to believe in
Savor the moment when ya turn out the light

Doin' the day job
Too many nightmares
You're dreamin' about a love you can't deny
Well, nothin' comes easy when you're a stranger
A stranger to who you are inside
Well, it don't take much for the spirit to give out
Hard to keep livin' this way

We all need somethin' to believe in
Gotta have truth in our lives
We all need somethin' to believe in
Savor the moment when ya turn out the light

We all need somethin' to believe in
Savor the moment when ya turn out the light
Gotta get us to the other side

All the dreams that we put on display
Sometimes lose their meaning
But the dreams that we hold in our hearts
Are the ones that keep us around

Well, we all need somethin' to believe in
Gotta have truth in our lives
We all need somethin' to believe in
Savor the moment when ya turn out the light
When ya turn out the light

We all need somethin' to believe in
Gotta have truth in our lives
We all need somethin' to believe in
Savor the moment when ya turn out the light
Gotta get us to the other side
