This was the first song Meryl and I ever wrote. It came together pretty quickly at Backdoor Studios. We knew right away we had the right chemistry to collaborate on more music. I keep thinking this tune was influenced by the Violent Femme's song "Gone Daddy Gone". Who knows? The song features an actual Moog synthesizer which was unpredictable to work with (pitch wise) but it sure had a cool analog sound. It was also one of the first tunes we ever used the Alesis drum machine on.
That certainly places it at a specific time frame. Classic.

lyrics

SOMETIMES I WISH I HAD A CLONE

The state of mind you're always in, I know is old
You never change the pink flamingo curtains in the stall
But that isn't the problem
It's a deeper running sore
There's nothing worse than faking your attention when I talk

Well, sometimes I wish I had a clone to listen up when I'm screamin'
At least that's warmer than a stone
Well sometimes I wish I had a clone
I know it's hard to believe it
But you can't relate to me at all

The simple things that make us click,
I know are small
And friend to friend a mutual agreement has it's toll
But that isn't the problem
It's more the way the crossing falls
From time to time you cut off your commitments when I call

Well sometimes I wish I had a clone to listen up when I'm screamin'
At least that's warmer than a stone
Well, sometimes I wish I had a clone
I know it's hard to believe it
But you can't relate to me at all
No you can't relate to me at all
Well no!

Traces of the heart is a game for a stranger
Roll the die to avoid any danger
I can see a train light growing brighter not dimmer
Like the truth in the eyes of a sinner
Traces of the heart is a game for a stranger
You roll the die to avoid any danger
I can see a train light burning brighter not dimmer

Painting lies...
Breaking ties...
Changing sides!

Well, sometimes I wish I had a clone to listen up when I'm screamin'
At least that's warmer than a stone
Well sometimes I wish I had a clone
I know it's hard to believe it
But you can't relate to me at all
Well, sometimes I...
Well I wish that...
I wish I had a clone!

Yeah sometimes I wish I had a clone
Yeah sometimes I wish I had a clone
Yeah sometimes I wish I had a clone

That's right!

The state of mind you're always in I know
The state of mind you're always in I know
The state of mind you're always in I know
The state of mind you're always in I know

It's like a science project
The state of mind you're always in I know
It's only love over matter
It's only love over matter
