In 1986 I came up with a song called Safe Conservative Clothesure. It was the first part of a segue of ideas I strung together on the Tascam™ 8 Track recorder. The final piece was entitled Dark Clouds. The last part of which can be heard on the CD Music Box Orphans under the title Dark, Cloudy Hedge Appendage. In any event in 1993 I wanted to resurrect SCC so with some new drum programming tools at my disposal I approached the idea in a funky style. In fact, I got Nick DiMauro to program some of the basic beat. The track came out great but I could not quite settle on a melody. The original idea was nice but it didn’t really jell with this new feel. So I asked Meryl Mathews if she would come up with something and also to play a keyboard solo on the track. She obliged. The keyboard solo stuck but her melody (which was good) had no words and for whatever reason we did not pursue it. I eventually played the track for Gian DiMauro and he was instantly inspired. We stripped down my arrangement and wrote the lyrics and melody in a very short amount of time. It’s a cool song that can be found on the CD Fancy Monsters.

lyrics

THE WEIGHT OF NATURE IS CALLING

I've spent my whole life just driftin'
A broken promise was a reoccurring theme
Now inner rhythms are shifting
I'm not sure why but I know it's time

The weight of nature is calling
I've waited all of my life to be here
The weight of nature is falling into my arms tonight
The feeling is clear

Turn off the midnight patroller
A deeper voice is waking me from this dream
Some truer angle informer is telling me:
You are free!

The weight of nature is calling
I've waited all of my life to be here
The weight of nature is falling into my arms tonight
The feeling is clear
The weight of nature is calling
The fate of nature is calling

I miss the days when I would fool around
Those times when innocence meant more than just the latest fashion
Open the pages of the lost & found
I've got no reservations left to keep me waiting around

-(The weight of nature is calling...)

The weight of nature is calling
I've waited all of my life to be here
The fate of nature is falling into my arms tonight
The feeling is clear
The weight of nature is calling in my head I hear it
The weight of nature is calling in my head I hear it
The weight of nature is calling in my head I hear it
The weight of nature is calling in my head I hear it
