This song was originally supposed to be a Modern Voices tune starting off with the Casio 5ths patch and leading into the 24-track tune "On That Day". Basically all I had at the time was the opening line with big harmonies. Chris Pati and I were starting to drift apart as musical collaborators at this point and our group Modern Voices fell by the way side. I still thought the opening line: "The door to another world is out there when you are down..." was a pleasant idea for a tune. Lyrics quickly followed and I finished this fairly serious tune in my bedroom in 1988. Some of the synth sounds came from the (once again) Casio CZ 5000. In spots it sounds like Lyle Mays is doodling in the background. The hook: "This I need to know", came about after hearing a song by Level 42 on the radio. It was their big hit but I won't tell you the title. All you Billboard aficionados can flex your memories at this juncture. Anyway, the two ideas have little in common at first but on close inspection the notes used in the melody of "This I need to know" are very similar to the E minor 9 chord used for "The door to another world". The middle section is just an open build up with an F major 7 chord getting us there. I like the sound of that chord on the acoustic guitar and it is a typical Tabacco move. A few close friends who mean a lot to me inspired the lyrics.
