Because of the nature of my rent-a-car bozo job, I was sent to repossess, collect, fix and deliver cheaply made American vehicles all over Long Island. This, compounded by the fact that most of what was played on the radio sucked, my work mates were for the most part mindless divorcees, and I got paid doodly squat for long hours, made for a pretty miserable life. At least I didn't live in Wyandanch. As you crossed the mid-island train tracks, there it was. A run down kind of town with depressed dudes pissin' on the church curb, swigging a mysterious liquid in a paper bag and little kids learning the fine art of tire slashing. Poverty everywhere and just the next town over you have some rich mafia kids driving around in new sports cars that their folks got them so they don't have to walk to school. I’d be pissed! Some blatantly have and some blatantly starve. What gives and where’s God? Well, without going into detail, the words of this tune have more to do with jealousy than poverty. Wyandanch just happened to fit the hook melody and it stirred up some deep feelings. Most of these feelings emerge in the melody of the hook. It is one of the strongest I've ever managed to come up with. (Some strangers at a party caught this song coming through the stereo and I over heard them say that they thought it was different and interesting. Boy was I on cloud nine and you know how much I dislike hanging out at parties.) The droning verses are "The Little Drummer Boy". Why you may ask? I'm not sure. Maybe I was going for a Dan Robinson minimalist thing. Who knows? Anyway, at the time I was heavily into Steely Dan (thus the "Barry Town" reference and chord sequence) and Paul Simon's album "One Trick Pony" (thus the tense middle section). The sitar solo was sung into a cheap Panasonic™ picnic tape deck and quickly transcribed to the Mirage™ sitar sound. I’d really enjoy listening to this song if it weren’t for the lousy vocal sound. I remixed it a bunch of times but I couldn't make it sound good. This mix is from Backdoor Studios in Huntington Station , NY. Incidentally, this was one of 5 pieces that stirred up interest at DMZ Publishing in Manhattan.

lyrics

YOU MAY END UP IN WYANDANCH

Are you the only one that he really loves?
Are you the only one that he really loves?
Or is there someone else?
Somebody else above?
Are you the only one that he really loves?

Now every time I ask you who it might be you say i'm out of my mind
Am I the only one?
Or maybe you are blind
Are you losing sight of the real thing?

Well you should know, ‘cause you've been there
You take your chances win or lose
There's so many roads but you'll have to beware or you'll end up in Wyandanch
You'll end up in Wyandanch
You better beware...

Is he the only one that you cannot hide?
Am I the only one who has to see you cry?
Well, his "Barrytown" friends (most of them have lied)
So if I seem a bit suspicious please forgive me
I'm afraid to let go!
And I remember you said:
"Don't dare to lose sight of the real things!"

Well, you should know, ‘cause you've been there
You take your chance win or lose
There's room at the top but you have to beware
You may spend it in Wyandanch
Yeah, you should know, ‘cause you've been there
You take your chance win or lose
We're looking for love but with whom should you share?
You tell me you found it
You tell me you found it
Well, I hope that it's true
I hope that it's true

The thermostat is way too high and I know that isn't you
He's trapped you in this bas ass town
Don't you blame me
Don't you dare blame me!

You should know, ‘cause you've been there
You take your chance win or lose
here's so many roads but you'll have to beware
Or you'll end up it in Wyandanch
Well you should know, ‘cause you've been there
You take your chance win or lose
There's room at the top but you have to beware
You may spend it in Wyandanch
You may spend it in Wyandanch

What a bad ass town!
Well, you should know!
