I always dug this song that Gian composed (some lyrical help from Howard Berger) and recorded in his childhood bedroom. His brother Nick executed a wonderful vocal on it but that version was never released to the public. I was one of maybe two or three people on the planet who had a copy of it. I listened to it countless times over the next 27 years swearing to myself that at one point I would do a cover of it. Well, that time came in October of 2014. I just inherited a bitchin' computer from my sister and Paul Michael Barkan helped me set it up with a new version of Logic Pro. In order to get a feel for this new version I needed something to record. I wasn't feeling particularly creative at that juncture when all of a sudden - "bingo!" the idea hit me. Why not cover Gian's tune? It was easy to play and I could try out all kinds of new plug-ins producing it. Capital idea! Other than the vocal which took forever (Nick's was so good - he really set the bar high) the production came together pretty quick. I especially had a blast doing the keyboard solo (reminiscent of the sound I used on "Burn Away The Haze"). I was feeling mighty fine for a few hours after the initial "final" mix. Of course, then it occurred to me I would eventually have to play it for the composer in order to release it. Would Gian like it? Would he feel musically violated or offended? After all, this song was never made available to the general public. How dare I? Amazingly, his only complaint upon hearing it was the bass part which he felt was a bit too synthetic and way too loud. I had no problem trying out new bass sounds and he was right about the balance. I cleaned up the bass part (simplified it) and brought down it's volume. He approved and all was good in Tabaccoland. Now, at least the world can get a chance to check out this beautiful, haunting ballad.

lyrics

YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED

She is so clear to me from six feet underground
Even though she is hard to see
She is where the best things are found

Wise guys sometimes wonder how she feels inside
Bright ideas can burn out fast
Even wisdom can't ponder all that she can hide

You would be surprised
You would be surprised

She is so dear to me
How crazy does that sound?
Laying down this burden of my dreams
Buried safely in this hallowed ground

Caustic glances can break your hardened point of view
Frustration is all that you feel
When you hear a voice ache, it's wrenching out of you
Out of You!

You would be surprised to find she loved you
You would be surprised to find she loved you
