This instrumental started off as a piano piece written in a scuzzy Stony Brook piano room after hearing Thelonious Monk's classic "Round Midnight". Between the Oberheim DX drum machine and the new Ensonique Mirage sampler I bought as soon as it came out, we couldn't have asked for much more (at least for a few hours ). We had perfect time and what was considered back then, a decent piano sample. A whole world of styles were at our feet. Any instrument you wanted. Bingo! ..The Mirage keyboard made it possible. And if they didn't have it you could sample your mother's sewing machine and use that for a flute sound or whatever. It was endlessly cool in theory. I digress... I showed Nick these chords I was playing and he programmed a "swing" section and a "funk" one. Then we just stuck the two together. Thus we subtitled it RAM AXE. Nick played the organ melody and I played distorted guitar. It's a sharp mix of styles but there's something charming about it. The ending is a homage to our favorite mutual group Steely Dan. Note the "Deacon Blues" Fagen changes we blatantly stole.
