The music to Sensitive Joan evolved simultaneously or out of several
other songs. At first it was called Next Time I’ll Know For Sure. This was
a lush ballad idea I never finished with Marci Geller, (eventually in 2000 I’d
turn it into the song It Don’t take A Genius). At the same time, it could
have been a ballad called Audra Town about a very loose southern snake
charmer. This idea when played just on guitar became a completely different animal and through the collaboration with Nick DiMauro, transpired into the Brian Rivera tune Soldier Town.
Also, at the exact same time:
Joan’s hook created the Brian Rivera tune, Don’t Be Afraid Of Thunder
(later turned into Heartless Wonder and my solo interpretation of that
song, Fool For Torture) as well as interweaving with I’ll Sell You A Lie,
Brian Rivera’s Baby’s Chief Distraction and some part of the Fuzzy Gray
Logic tune Feels So Good This Time. Musical incest at it’s best. Most of
these tunes start on an E chord and share similar harmonic progressions.
For those of you with perfect pitch you’ll notice Joan is in E-flat. The key
of E was just a bit too high for me to sing, so before I lost all inspiration to
vocalize on this ditty I quickly pushed the appropriate transpose button.
Lyrically, the song is sort of auto biographical and is based on my experiences of what happens if I get angry at someone and direct my full psychic negative side to a situation. I won’t be specific, but the coincidences are pretty astounding. Later on that. Joan has more problems then I will ever face.

lyrics

SENSITIVE JOAN

Sensitive Joan
Lost her money so she tried for a loan
The bank decided since her color was black
They couldn't trust her to pay it all back
Well she frowned and cried and left the building
And just right then the bank burst into flames

Sensitive Joan
Her righteous preacher tried to jump on her bones
He tied her down with his rosary beads
I guess the lord was not fulfilling his needs
Well, she frowned and cried and cursed the father
And the old man's vessels popped behind his eyes...
He went blind

J o a n
There are fools who try tearing you down to the smallest size
They have no clue where your powers reside
But I'll keep a tab on your alibis
You have a gift from the other side
I wish that I was so inclined
Sensitive Joan - I’m cryin’
Sensitive Joan - got me spyin’ on you

Sensitive Joan
You know she never has to dial a phone
She sends directly from an alternate plane
The military tried to harness her brain
Well, she frowned and cried and scared a general
Suddenly there were missiles in the sky
Headed straight for this guy!

J o a n
There are fools who try tearing you down to the smallest size
They have no clue where your powers reside
I'll keep a tab on your alibis
You have a gift from the other side

And I wanna know what you're thinking ?
I know you don’t like to talk much - small talk doesn't cut it
I know you're always thinking I can see the mechanics in your eyes
I wonder what you're thinking - you sensitive girl, Joan

Joan
There are fools who try tearing you down to the smallest size
They have no clue where your powers reside
But I'll keep a tab on your alibis

Joan
There are fools who try tearing you down to the smallest size
They have no clue where your powers reside
But I'll keep a tab on your alibis
You have a gift from the other side
I wish that I was so inclined

Sensitive Joan can you hear me?
Sensitive Joan can you feel me tonight?
Sensitive Joan can you hear me?
